The Physician Planning Gap

Most Financial Advisors Don't Understand What It Means to Be a Physician.

You spent a decade or more in training before you earned your first real paycheck. Your income is specialized, your liability exposure is significant, and your financial situation is fundamentally different from the clients most financial advisors are built to serve.

At Pinnacle Financial Group, physician financial planning is not an add-on service. It is a core specialty. We have advised 129 physicians across South Florida and we understand the nuances that make medical professionals a distinct planning category.

Career Stage Planning

We Plan Specifically for Physicians at Every Stage of Their Career.

Whether you are finishing residency, running a thriving practice, or preparing to transition out of medicine, the financial decisions you face require planning that is built for your stage — not a generic wealth management framework.

Stage 01

Residents & Fellows

You are beginning to generate income for the first time after years of training. This is the window to lock in own-occupation disability coverage at the lowest premium you will ever pay, establish a financial foundation before lifestyle inflation takes hold, and begin addressing student loan strategy. The decisions made in residency compound over a 30-year career. Starting here is the highest-leverage move in physician financial planning.

Stage 02

Attending Physicians

Your income has increased significantly and your exposure has increased with it. This is the stage to ensure your disability coverage matches your specialty income and not a group plan's benefit cap, to maximize tax-advantaged retirement savings beyond what a 401(k) allows, and to implement a coordinated wealth accumulation and protection strategy that reflects the full scope of your income and liability.

Stage 03

Private Practice Owners

You carry both personal and business financial risk simultaneously. You need disability coverage, business continuity planning, group benefits for your staff that compete in the labor market, executive compensation strategies for key physicians, and a succession plan that protects the value you have built. Personal and business planning cannot be addressed in isolation at this stage — they must be coordinated as a single strategy.

Stage 04

Physicians Approaching Retirement

You have built significant assets and now face the challenge of converting them into reliable, sustainable income. You need a retirement income strategy that addresses longevity, a Medicare plan that serves the healthcare standards you have maintained throughout your career, a long-term care structure that protects accumulated wealth, and an estate plan that transfers that wealth efficiently to the next generation.

Planning Services

A Complete Financial Planning Framework Built Around Your Medical Career.

Pinnacle Financial Group provides a fully integrated suite of planning services designed to address every financial dimension of a physician's professional and personal life.

01
Own-Occupation Disability Insurance
Income Protection

Your most valuable financial asset is your ability to practice your specialty. Own-occupation disability insurance is the only type of coverage that pays the full benefit if you become unable to perform the specific duties of your medical specialty — even if you can work in another capacity. A cardiologist who can no longer perform procedures but could theoretically consult or teach receives the full benefit. Under a group or any-occupation policy, they may receive nothing. We evaluate your current coverage against your specialty income, identify gaps, and design a coordinated disability income structure built to your actual situation.

02
Physician Retirement Income Planning
Retirement Strategy

Most physicians have a compressed savings window and cannot rely solely on traditional retirement accounts to fund a 30-year retirement. We build retirement income strategies that combine qualified plan contributions with non-qualified accumulation vehicles, Social Security optimization, income layering to create a sustainable distribution structure, and longevity modeling to ensure your plan is not built only to the average life expectancy.

03
Tax-Advantaged Wealth Accumulation
Tax Strategy

Physicians in the upper income brackets face marginal tax rates that significantly reduce the net value of traditional retirement contributions. We identify and implement strategies that address the gap between IRS contribution limits and physician-level income — including non-qualified deferred compensation, cash value life insurance structures, and executive bonus arrangements that build tax-advantaged wealth outside the qualified plan system.

04
Life Insurance for Physicians
Family Protection

A financial plan without adequate life insurance is incomplete. For physicians, life insurance serves multiple purposes simultaneously — income replacement for your family in early and mid-career, estate liquidity for high-asset estates, and in certain permanent structures, a supplement to retirement income and a tax-advantaged wealth transfer mechanism. We design life insurance strategies that address the specific uses a policy serves at your current stage of career and life.

05
Long-Term Care Planning
Asset Protection

Physicians understand better than most clients that the probability of needing long-term care is significant. The cost of that care in South Florida — whether at home, in an assisted living facility, or in a skilled nursing setting — can erode decades of accumulated wealth in a compressed timeframe. We evaluate standalone long-term care insurance, hybrid life/LTC policies, and self-insurance strategies to find the right structure for your situation and budget.

06
Medical Practice Business Planning
Practice Protection

For physicians who own or co-own a practice, business financial planning is inseparable from personal financial planning. We provide Buy-Sell Agreement design and funding, Key Physician Insurance, Business Overhead Expense coverage, executive compensation design, and group employee benefit plans — integrated with your personal disability, retirement, and estate strategy so that the business and personal dimensions of your financial life reinforce rather than compete with each other.

Why Pinnacle

Why Physicians in South Florida Choose Pinnacle Financial Group.

There is no shortage of financial advisors in South Florida. The difference is not how many products we can access. It is how deeply we understand the planning needs of medical professionals.

129 Physicians Advised

We have advised 129 physicians across Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Collier counties. We understand the nuances of hospital-employed vs. private practice, surgical specialties vs. primary care, and single-physician practices vs. multi-partner groups.

Fully Independent

We are not captive to any single insurance company or financial institution. We shop across multiple carriers to find the coverage and solutions that fit your situation — not the solutions that fit our quota.

Integrated Planning

Rather than working with separate advisors for insurance, retirement, and tax planning, Pinnacle provides a coordinated strategy across every dimension of your financial life — so nothing falls through the gaps between advisors.

Fiduciary-Level Commitment

We operate with a commitment to transparency, regulatory compliance, and fiduciary-level thinking. Our A-rating with the Better Business Bureau reflects the standard we hold ourselves to in every client engagement.

Local Presence

Headquartered at 2625 Weston Rd. in Weston, Florida, we serve physicians across South Florida including Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Coral Gables, Naples, and Palm Beach — not as a remote advisor, but as part of the same community.

Client Feedback

Dr. Michael A.
Orthopedic Surgeon  |  Fort Lauderdale, FL

As physicians, our most valuable asset is our ability to earn an income, yet many of us overlook protecting it properly. Ricky Gonzalez at Pinnacle Financial Group helped me review my existing disability coverage and showed me significant gaps I didn't realize were there. He structured an Individual Disability Insurance policy that protects my specialty income and includes future purchase options as my career grows. The process was extremely thorough but easy to understand. I now have peace of mind knowing my family and practice are protected if something unexpected happens.

Dr. Stephanie K.
Internal Medicine & Practice Owner  |  Weston, FL

When we expanded our medical practice, we realized our employee benefits were outdated and not competitive. Pinnacle Financial Group conducted a full benefits review and helped us redesign our group benefits package including health, disability, and voluntary supplemental plans for our staff. The new structure not only improved employee satisfaction but also helped us attract better talent. Ricky and his team understand the unique needs of medical practices and approached everything from a strategic business perspective.

Dr. David R.
Cardiologist  |  Boca Raton, FL

Like many physicians, I focused heavily on my practice and retirement accounts but hadn't explored advanced planning strategies. Ricky introduced me to executive compensation concepts and tax-advantaged planning strategies that complement my 401(k) and traditional retirement savings. Through Pinnacle Financial Group, we structured a strategy that helps me accumulate assets more efficiently while also providing protection for my family. Ricky speaks the language of physicians and truly understands the financial challenges we face.

Dr. Ana M.
Pediatrician  |  Coral Gables, FL

After the birth of our second child, my husband and I wanted to make sure our family would always be protected financially. Ricky Gonzalez helped us design a life insurance strategy that not only protects our family but also supports long-term financial planning. He walked us through several options and explained the differences clearly without pushing any particular product. His guidance gave us confidence that we made the right decision for our family's future.

Founder & CEO, Pinnacle Financial Group — Weston, Florida

Ricky Gonzalez is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle Financial Group, Inc. With more than 27 years of experience in the financial services industry, Ricky has dedicated his career to serving individuals and families who face the kind of financial complexity that a generalist advisor is not equipped to handle. A significant focus of his practice is serving physicians and medical professionals across South Florida.

His career began at AXA Advisors in 2001. Over the following decades, he expanded his expertise across disability insurance for physicians, physician retirement income planning, tax-advantaged wealth strategies, and medical practice business planning. He understands the relationship between a physician's personal income, their practice, and their long-term financial security in ways that generalist advisors who encounter physicians occasionally do not.

He is known for an educational, empathetic planning approach. The best financial plans are built through conversation and genuine understanding of each client's situation — not through product presentations.

How We Work

Our Physician Financial Planning Process.

Every Pinnacle engagement begins the same way: with a focused conversation about your career stage, your income structure, your existing coverage, and your goals — before any recommendation is made.

01

Private Consultation

A confidential consultation to understand your current situation: career stage, specialty, income level, existing coverage, benefit structures, student loans, practice ownership status, and your goals for income protection, retirement, and family security.

02

Comprehensive Analysis

We review your existing policies, retirement accounts, benefit structures, and financial obligations in full. We identify gaps, redundancies, and planning opportunities specific to your specialty, career stage, and employment structure.

03

Customized Physician Strategy

We build a coordinated, written financial strategy that integrates disability protection, retirement income planning, tax-advantaged accumulation, life insurance, and — where applicable — practice business planning into a single framework.

04

Implementation & Ongoing Review

We implement the strategy and remain your ongoing advisor as your career and life evolve. Income changes, practice transitions, new family obligations, and retirement timeline shifts all trigger plan reviews. We are a long-term relationship, not a transaction.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions from Physicians.

Physicians need own-occupation disability insurance — the only type of policy that pays the full benefit if you become unable to perform the specific duties of your medical specialty, even if you can work in another capacity. A cardiologist who can no longer perform cardiac procedures but could theoretically teach or consult receives the full benefit under an own-occupation policy. Under a group or any-occupation policy, they may receive nothing. This distinction is the most important in physician disability planning.
In most cases, no. Group long-term disability policies typically cover 60 percent of your base salary, use an any-occupation definition of disability rather than own-occupation, cap the monthly benefit at a level that does not reflect physician income, and do not follow you when you change employers. An individual own-occupation policy is portable, specialty-specific, and sized to your actual income — not a group plan's benefit cap.
As early as possible in your career — ideally during residency or fellowship. Disability insurance premiums are based on your age and health at the time of application. A policy purchased during residency locks in a lower premium for the life of the contract. It also secures insurability before any health conditions develop that could make coverage more expensive or unavailable. The cost difference between a residency-era policy and one purchased at peak attending income is substantial over the life of the contract.
Physicians have access to several retirement savings vehicles depending on their employment structure. Hospital-employed physicians typically have access to a 403(b) or 457(b). Private practice owners can establish SEP IRAs, Solo 401(k) plans, or defined benefit pension plans — which allow significantly higher annual contributions than employee-based plans. Beyond qualified plans, physicians frequently use non-qualified strategies including cash value life insurance and deferred compensation arrangements to address the gap between IRS contribution limits and their actual income level.
Yes, for several reasons specific to physicians. If you are in early or mid-career, your future earning potential is your largest financial asset — and that asset disappears if you die prematurely. Student loan balances, mortgages, and family income dependence all create obligations that savings alone may not cover at the moment of death. For established physicians, permanent life insurance provides estate liquidity, tax-advantaged wealth transfer, and in certain structures, supplemental retirement income.
Most financial advisors are generalists who serve a broad range of clients with similar planning frameworks. Pinnacle Financial Group has built its practice around the specific planning needs of physicians and medical professionals. We have advised 129 physicians across South Florida, understand the nuances of hospital-employed vs. private practice structures, know the carrier landscape for own-occupation disability insurance at the specialty level, and integrate every dimension of physician financial planning — disability, retirement, tax strategy, practice planning, and estate coordination — into a single strategy.
